Exmoor, October 2011

These are a few pictures I took on and around Exmoor.

A stag just after dawn on one of the few sunny mornings.

Another stag, freshly-coated in mud, that just walked my way whilst I was stalking another group.

Four pictures from the best morning on the moor. I was sat, well camouflaged, in the middle of a bog, from well before dawn. As the sun rose, the stag noticed something unusual from quite a distance and headed straight for me, initially sending one of his hinds in front of him. He did come very close and I should have changed cameras but I didn't dare take my eyes off him in case he decided to attack. There were some other observers on a nearby road, including Johnny Kingdom.

Recently-cut hay fields, Dursley, 01-03 July 2011

Foxes in fields below the woods on Stinchcombe Hill, near Dursley. These are not tame urban foxes; they would run a quarter of a mile if they knew someone was in their vicinity! The first picture was taken at 04.34, half an hour before dawn, at ISO 1600, 1/20s, f/4; the final two of the cub were taken at 04.54, 10 minutes before dawn, at ISO 800, 1/25s and 1/30s, f/4.

Berkeley Hunt Point-to-Point, Woodford, April 2011

Here are a few pictures from this year's local point-to-point meeting. There were six races in the afternoon, most going twice around the 1½ mile circuit. Berkeley Castle can be seen in the background of some images. There was a clear blue sky, so the sun was strong and the contrast too high. Most pictures were taken at the extremes of the available aperture range: f/4 or f/22.
